How To Use Essential Oils To Fight Tooth Pain Until You Can See A Dentist

Tooth pain tends to strike at the most inopportune times. Pulpitis most often starts throbbing in the middle of the night. Cavities become more sensitive when you eat a large amount of sweets over the holidays. Teeth crack when you injure yourself on vacation. These are all times when you need to seek the help of an emergency dentist as soon as possible, but sometimes waiting a few hours for pain relief can be too much. Besides taking pain relievers, there are a few essential oils that you can use to help get rid of tooth pain.

Application of Essential Oils

When you use essential oils for tooth pain, there are several delivery methods you can try. The simplest method is to apply 1-2 drops of the essential oil on a cotton swab and place the swab directly on your tooth or gums for 1-2 minutes. However, some people find this method can cause negative reactions with some of the stronger essential oils, like peppermint. If you find it is too strong, simply wet the cotton swab first and then apply 1 drop of oil and hold it against your too.

If you are unsure of exactly which tooth is causing you pain, you may want to apply an oil to your whole mouth. To do this, add 5-10 drops of an essential oil to a carrier oil such as coconut oil and then gently swish the oil in your mouth for 3-5 minutes, as you would for oil pulling. If you do not have coconut oil, you can use olive oil or even water.

You can reapply essential oils once an hour, if needed, until you are able to see a dentist. However, do not constantly keep an essential oil in contact with your gums via a cotton ball, as this can cause irritation.

Essential Oils with Anesthetic Properties

Most people with tooth pain will be searching for a way to numb their nerves until they can deal with the problem causing the pain. If this is your case, you will want to look for essential oils with anesthetic properties. These are usually the oils that smell minty, such as tea tree, peppermint, mint, and eucalyptus. Any of these are good choices for tooth pain, but peppermint must be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied to an oral surface.

One oil that has been thoroughly tested as an anesthetic and is being professionally used in some countries is clove oil. This may be your best option when it comes to immediate relief.

Essential Oils to Stop Bleeding

If you suffer a trauma that causes bleeding in your mouth, the best way to stop the bleeding is through compression. You can simply gently push down on a cotton ball until you can see a dentist. However, a few drops of Helichrysum oil on the cotton ball will be even more helpful to stop the bleeding.

Helichrysum is a great oil to keep around for wounds in general and bleeding gums in your daily oral hygiene. However, if you don't have it, you can also try rose or geranium oil.

Getting a toothache should mean a trip to the dentist for emergency dental care as soon as possible. Even if the pain subsides, you can have decay or an injury that will cause the pain to return over the next few weeks, and it is likely to get worse with time. But you should not suffer while you wait to see a dentist. Be sure to keep your mouth clean, take the recommended amount of pain killers, and try these essential oils for immediate relief.
