A General Dentist Can Do More Than You Think

If you are having a problem with your teeth, you may be wondering which type of dentist to call. No matter what is wrong, the best place to start is always with your family dentist or a general dentistry practitioner. These professionals do not simply take x-rays and fill cavities. Quite often, they can handle most problems. Here are just a few of the other things they can do for you.

Caps, Bridges, and Flippers

If a tooth is so badly decayed a filling will not work, a general dentist may suggest placing a cap over it. He or she will grind the bad tooth until it all the crumbling parts have been removed and then glue a cap over it. When there is not enough good tooth left for a cap to be glued to it, the tooth will need to be extracted. Depending on where the tooth is missing and how many other teeth are missing, you may be fitted with either a bridge or a flipper. A bridge is used when more than one tooth is missing. However, these missing teeth must be in either the upper or the lower set. You cannot have one on the bottom and one on the top of a bridge. A flipper will be used when only one of your front teeth is gone.

Cosmetic Treatments

When you have stained or slightly crooked teeth, a general dentist can help. Whitening treatments can be done to help get rid of stains. However, if you have any false teeth or veneers, the treatment will not work on them. Make sure that the treatment will be done so that your natural teeth will match your false ones for an even smile. When the problem is a few crooked teeth or a gap between them, Veneers are a good option. These are thin pieces of porcelain that are glued to the front of your teeth.

General Health

Sometimes, the problem in your mouth stems from something else going on in your body. For example, untreated diabetes can result in tooth decay. Your dentist can notice the problem and let you know you need to see your primary doctor. In addition, infections in the mouth may lead to other health issues, including heart disease. Taking care of your mouth could prevent you from serious problems elsewhere in your body.

While a general dentistry practitioner may refer you to a specialist, it is because he or she wants you to receive the best treatments possible. It does not mean they are not capable of treating your problem, but it is not something they do all the time. The specialist handles one area of dentistry only so has more experience with the problem. Luckily, there are general dentists that can do most procedures but know when to send you to someone else.
