Tips For Keeping Your Dentures Clean

You should clean your dentures daily since dirty dentures can lead to multiple dental and oral complications. Below are a few tips to help you maintain impeccably clean dentures.

Brush the Dentures Daily

Your dentures get dirty every minute they spend in your mouth. It's not just the food you eat; even the microorganisms, tartar, and dental plaque in your mouth clog the dentures. Thus, you should clean the dentures on a daily basis.

Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

Dentures are relatively delicate so you shouldn't use a hard-bristled toothbrush on them; the hard bristles might scratch the dentures. Scratched dentures are dangerous because debris and germs can hide within the scratches. Therefore, use soft-bristled toothbrushes or toothbrushes specifically meant for cleaning dentures.

Use Ultrasonic Cleaners

Brushing your dentures only gets rid of large particles of debris. You need to take a further step and use ultrasonic cleaners on the dentures. An ultrasonic cleaner is a cleaning appliance that vibrates to dislodge even the microscopic debris that mechanical toothbrushes cannot get rid of.

Don't Use Toothpaste

Toothpaste is abrasive so it will also scratch the dentures just the way a hard-bristled toothbrush can. Other cleaners to avoid include household bleach or other forms of bleaching products not meant for dentures.

Soak In Chemical Cleaners

Some denture stains are so difficult to get rid of that brushing or even ultrasonic cleaning can't touch them. That's why you need to soak your dentures in suitable chemicals to get rid of the stains. Don't forget that dentures are porous, so they do absorb some stains. When you soak the dentures, the chemicals go deep into the pores to get rid of the debris. You can use denture cleaners, mild household soap, or even hand soap.

Handle With Care

Dentures are not as tough as they look so you should handle them with care. Sure, you can use your dentures to eat and chew food just as you normally would, but they can get damaged if you drop them on the floor. Dropping the dentures also exposes them to further contamination. That's why it's advisable to clean your dentures over the sink. That way, they won't drop to the floor even if they slip out of your hand.

Clean Teeth Before Denture Reinsertion

Lastly, you should also clean your mouth and teeth before reinserting your dentures. If you don't do this, then the food remains and bacteria in your mouth will just recontaminate the dentures after reinsertion.
